Free search engine optimization audit for a brilliant business

Really unique and clever business ideas don't come along all that often, and when they do I feel obliged to help them out with some free SEO advice.

I came across We Rent Goats today, and loved their eco-friendly idea of clearing weeds and brush with goats, instead of harmful herbicides.

The site opens with a cute sign of a goat carrying a sign around his neck - "will work for food". Nice touch.

Step-by-step guide showing how to recover from a drop in Web traffic

Restoring Web traffic volumes after a Google algorithmic penalty (especially one like Panda or Penguin) can be a very difficult and, often, fruitless task - without any guarantees.

In fact, many websites that find themselves penalized by Panda end up never recovering their original traffic levels and page rankings - and may, if their revenue streams are not sufficiently diversified, go out of business as a result.

Efforts at improving your website's content, link profile, performance, SEO and any other search related issues you can think of, may or may not result in a recovery of page rankings and organic search traffic.

Everyone creating a website, regardless of whether it is a blog, small business site, or shopping cart, should keep Google and SEO in mind right from the start.

Almost every aspect of building a site from choosing a domain, Web hosting company, website builder or CMS, Web design, through to page layout and color scheme, can affect the way Google ranks a site.

While it is never good policy to rely only on organic search traffic from Google, the fact remains that it is one of the largest (if not the largest) sources of traffic on the Web.

Strong evidence that small business is susceptible to negative SEO in Google?

Negative SEO attack using duplicated content to affect Google Panda

According to Google there is a very slim chance that negative SEO, as a tactic, will work to damage the page rankings of a blog or website.

There should be nothing that any 3rd party can do to a small business website to hurt its Web traffic from Google organic search.

That might be true, but it might not. It is something that every business and blogger should be concerned about, given how much power Google has to shape the fortunes of your business online.

3 tips to avoid a sudden drop in Web traffic

Google analytics showing drop in Web traffic from Google organic search

Having a sudden drop in organic search traffic from Google as a result of a manual or algorithmic penalty is a painful thing for bloggers and businesses alike.

Search traffic from Google accounts for a huge share of all Internet traffic, so being penalized by Panda (Google's content quality algorithm) can be very costly.

Google's efforts to improve their search results and clean up the Internet mean that honest businesses and bloggers need to take more care over their content and their websites.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for eCommerce sites plays a vital role in driving valuable organic search traffic that converts into sales and revenue.

But, over the last few years, as Google has unleashed Panda and Penguin on Web spammers, thin affiliates, and duplicate content sites, many online store owners feel that SEO is a dirty word - a way to cheat instead of compete.

In fact, we should draw a distinction between good SEO (that is encouraged by Google), and bad SEO that we'll simply label Web spam.

Google Analytics showing Web traffic loss arising from Google Panda penalty

Recovering Web traffic lost as a result of a Google Panda penalty is something every blogger or webmaster should attempt - even if you aren't aware of an existing penalty.

Some statistics indicate that around 60% of websites suffer needlessly from Google Panda penalties without the webmaster's knowledge.

This means that your website could be receiving a fraction of the Web traffic it deserves, because a Panda penalty applies site-wide (so bad content in one part of your site can affect everything).

Managing business listings is important for local SEO. Pic by jairoagua

Google, and other major search engines, favor local search optimization (especially for businesses) because a large number of searches conducted online are for local information.

Local SEO is a really important part of any Internet marketing or search optimization strategy.

Not only because of the search engines' bias in favor of local results, but also because attracting a local audience is simply more valuable for most businesses.

This article shows how important it is to create and maintain a wide array of local business listings for great local SEO, and how to manage and maintain these listings to drive high converting traffic from local search.

Why small business should pay for the best SEO services

Small businesses continually buy low cost SEO services. Pic by janesdead

I'm going to have a rant about business buying low cost SEO (Search Engine Optimization) services that not only have little positive effect on their page rankings, but often lead to a decrease in organic Web traffic.

When Google's Panda algorithm first arrived on the scene many legitimate businesses were penalized, and this hit small business revenue streams hard.

I had a lot of sympathy for those businesses at the time. After all, it's not really fair to expect a small business to also be experts at SEO and Internet marketing, in addition to their core offering.

With Google's Panda update #25 lurking just around the corner, it's important that sites under penalty from previous Panda updates are taking the right steps to resolve their SEO problems.

The Panda algorithm deals predominantly with content quality, including issues like duplicate content, thin content, and generally poor quality content.
